Lore & Background

In Monster Hunter Stories, a Rathalos is the first major threat encountered in the plot. It attacks Hakum Village while afflicted with the Black Blight, a mysterious sickness. The protagonist's newly hatched Rathalos, Ratha, attempts to defend the village but is seemingly killed in the struggle. Cheval's mother also dies during this attack. The Rathalos's assault leaves a lasting impact: Ratha survives but carries the Black Blight from a wound inflicted by the Rathalos, which later manifests during the final battle against Makili Pietru. The Rathalos is thus directly tied to the origin of the Black Blight's spread and the personal tragedies that drive the characters.

In Their Own Story

The game begins with the protagonist, Cheval, and Lilia searching for a monster egg. They find a nest with one, which hatches into a Rathalos that bonds with the protagonist immediately. They nickname the creature Ratha. Upon their return to Hakum Village, a Nargacuga afflicted with a sickness called the Black Blight attacks. Ratha tries to defend the village, but is seemingly killed. Cheval's mother dies in the attack. A year later, the village has recovered, but the threat of the Black Blight still remains. Later in the story, during the final battle against Makili Pietru, Ratha's Blight, transmitted from a wound inflicted by the Nargacuga that attacked the village a year back, suddenly manifests and the player must defeat Ratha first before facing Makili Pietru.

Reader's Guide

The Nargacuga appears only in the story of Monster Hunter Stories, not as a regular monster the player can encounter, befriend, or battle in gameplay. Its role is purely narrative: it is the monster that attacks Hakum Village at the start of the game, carrying the Black Blight. This event kills Cheval's mother and seemingly kills the protagonist's Rathalos, Ratha. The wound Ratha receives from the Nargacuga later causes Ratha to become afflicted with the Black Blight during the final battle against Makili Pietru, forcing the player to defeat Ratha before continuing. The Nargacuga is not a monster the player can ride, hatch from an egg, or fight in the game's turn-based battle system.
